Excerpt

After 48 hours of chaos, finally, it’s quiet. Very quiet. For an entire day there isn’t a peep at the ranch, which is weird because even though we don’t talk to each other that much, you can still usually hear that “big family” noise of something always going on. But after everything, we are all so burned out, I don’t think anyone has anything else to say. Even Sloane stays in her room, and I don’t even hear her phone beeping or her stereo. She’s done, just like the rest of us. Even the usual sound of Frankie running around doing her stunts is silenced, as her leg is now in one of those casts with the pins sticking out of it, and she’s not supposed to get out of bed for at least the next couple of weeks. If not for the fact that we need Dad to drive us back, I think we would probably go somewhere else. What’s worse, we’ve all been forbidden to call our friends, which is maybe the only thing that makes family vacations tolerable.

The tense silence of people who have simply given up is not like the peaceful silence of a serene and relaxing vacation, though, and after the first day I decide that I’m going to go tell my dad about my decision to leave the Whitley family forever and go away to boarding school.

He’s going to have to get used to the idea eventually, I figure.

Book Description

Lucy Whitley cannot wait to get out of Palm Desert. It’s not a place for a frizzy-haired science nerd, particularly when her fashion-obsessed older sister Sloane is the head of a clique of pretty girls who rule the school—and practically the whole town.Fortunately, life is about to change forever. Lucy’s dad is getting re-married, and then she can transfer to a boarding school in Connecticut, escaping all the mean girls and the endless whispers about the Whitley family scandal. Everything is going to be perfect—as long as the wedding goes smoothly.
