About the Author

Kimberly is the author of the BODY FINDER series (HarperCollins) and THE PLEDGE trilogy (Simon & Schuster). She lives in the Pacific Northwest, the ideal place to write anything dark or creepy...a gloomy day can set the perfect mood. She lives with her husband and their three beautiful (and often mouthy) children who provide an endless source of inspiration.

Description

In the violent country of Ludania, the classes are strictly divided by the language they speak. The smallest transgression, like looking a member of a higher class in the eye while they are speaking their native tongue, results in immediate execution. Seventeen-year-old Charlaina has always been able to understand the languages of all classes, and she's spent her life trying to hide her secret. The only place she can really be free is the drug-fueled underground clubs where people go to shake off the oppressive rules of the world they live in. It's there that she meets a beautiful and mysterious boy named Max who speaks a language she's never heard before . . . and her secret is almost exposed.

Charlie is intensely attracted to Max, even though she can't be sure where his real loyalties lie. As the emergency drills give way to real crisis and the violence escalates, it becomes clear that Charlie is the key to something much bigger: her country's only chance for freedom from the terrible power of a deadly regime.

My Thoughts

I really don't know  why i didn't pick up this book sooner, it had everything I love, magic, suspense and a great love story! What I loved about this novel, from the very beginning was its mix of genres. It was a combination of dystopian society and medieval setting. I loved that.

The main character was a great read, she was strong and independent but also had a great love for her family, which I found very refreshing. Charlie was a character who wanted nothing more than to be invisible and live her life normally, but as we find out early, she is far from normal.

Charlie's relationship with her best friends Brooklynn and Aron are very different than her family. They know nothing of her secret and she tried everything in her power to keep them in the dark, because she knows it will not be good if they find out. But what I found very interesting was Brooklynn's characters. I never really liked her in the beginning, I thought she was selfish and out of control but things changed at the end of the book. She became a different person and I don't really know how I feel about it. It came out of nowhere and i think it could have been integrated a little bit better.

Max was a character that I want more of! His relationship with Charlie was perfectly placed within the book and it made logical sense to me. Their interactions were so adorable that I just wanted to read their scenes and nothing else. A good love story is something YA novels are known for and this one was done VERY well. You might just have to add Max to your Book Boyfriend list ;)

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast read with alot of intrigue and a great ending that left me wanting to read more. I can't wait for The Essence to be released in early January 2013!

4/5 Stars

  1. I am totally the odd one out with this book. Everyone seems to love it but I just couldn't get into. Whether it was the characters or it's short time line or something else entirely I have no idea.
