Breathless Reads/Faze Magazine Event Recap

Saturday, February 23, 2013

When I first saw the posting for this event I was really excited. I mean, The Breathless Reads Tour NEVER comes to Canada and this was my chance to meet some authors that I might not get the pleasure of meeting again.

When I signed up I saw that there was an age restriction of 13-24 years old, I also saw that there were three musical acts and a Much Music VJ to host the event. I was a little weary about this only because I don't do well around screaming teenage girls and I knew this would make me feel really old (even though I am only 24). Nevertheless I signed up, it was free and it was a once in a lifetime chance to see all of these authors together.

The line to get into the event was very long, and COLD considering it was in the minus double digits. I will admit that I was getting a little impatient, only because we could see inside the building at some staff members making cupcakes for the authors and because I couldn't feel my feet. But, being a girl who has spent her teenage years standing in line to get into concerts, this was a very low concern.

Once we got in there was plenty to see, nail stations, beauty stations and of course a place to buy some of the books you didn't have for the signing (of course I already had all of them). It became very clear, very fast that the event was centered around the musical acts and their primary audience; the teens. I will be honest and say that I was a little disappointed at the beginning of the event, because it wasn't what I expected. But, after a few minutes I realized that it didn't matter if this event was centered around the music guests and not the authors, because you know what? It was free and I got to see some of my favorite authors no matter if the teens were only there to scream for the bands.

I had a great time listening so some admittedly horrible signing from one act, but the rest of the bands were actually quite entertaining. I have seen many people complain about how they felt tricked and deceived during the event, and I completely understand where they are coming from. But I also understand that this was an event for teens, and therefore I would obviously feel old being there. Penguin Canada and Razorbill Canada did an amazing job bringing these authors up here to see us fans, and I know it must have been a lot of hard work on behalf of everyone to get this event organized. From watching all the guests during the event and my own opinion, It was a success.

I was also lucky enough to be invited, by Penguin Canada, to go for dinner with the authors. I was extremely grateful that they gave me this opportunity to sit and talk more privately with Beth Revis, Jessica Spotswood and Adrienne Kress. The night was filled with lots of laughter, some weird stories from the tour and some amazing book conversations. I could not have been happier than I was that night. I could not stop smiling and I seriously still can't believe I had dinner with these amazing authors. They were amazing and I really hope to see them again very soon, when they come come up to Canada and do a bookstore signing and let everyone else talk with them like i did.

Overall i had an great time, listening to some music, having some great book chats with Kristen from My Bookish Fairytale and Giselle from Booknerd Canada. They always make for great company:) Thank you so much Penguin and Razorbill for the opportunity to see these amazing authors in person. I really appreciate the time and effort it took to make this event possible.

  1. That's great you ended up enjoying yourself! No, I knew it was a teen event but that wasn't really the part that I felt "tricked" about.. it was promoted to be more of a book event than it ended up being.. that's what I felt deceived on. And, like I had said in my recap, I don't fault the publisher in that since it's the first time for this event.. perhaps felt the Faze event details were a bit misleading.

Amazing you got to go to dinner with them tho :)

  2. WHOO! SO MUCH FUN at this event. Seriously, I'm so glad I have a book bestie for life :D

I'm SO glad you came to the dinner..Wasn't it so much fun? They're even better in person. Great recap hun! And I look forward to more adventures with you <3
