Description

When you can’t trust yourself, who can you believe?

Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who’s stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.

Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.

Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.

My Thoughts

I fell in love with this book because of the cover. At first I just thought it was a clever design but then once I read into the story I realized that the cover actually represented the story quite well. And it made me love it all the more :)

The story i told from Anna's point of view, which is very limited as to what is going on around her. The only think we know for sure is that she has a major thing for Sam, one of the boys that is locked up in her basement thanks to a secret operation put on by the Branch. I will say that I did get a little tired of all of Anna's thoughts about Sam, but I will say that in my mind he was quite attractive so I didn't mind that much! The fact that Sam was aloof and distant made for a lot of intrigue for me, I wanted to know what he actually felt about his situation of being part of a Government experiment and his feelings for Anna.

The pace of this book is amazingly fast and it kept me reading until the very end. I kept wanting to read to find out what Sam and the other boys were like before the Lab and if they ever remembered what happened to them. I loved the fast paced dialogue and that not all the characters were likable. Because I find that if all characters are flawless then there is nothing to grow on in books to come. And all the characters in this book had some sort of flaw. I really wish there was more time spent on the other boys in the group and not just Sam and his mysterious connection to Anna. Although I love a good love story as much as the next person, I found that the story pretty much centered around it, with the mystery of The Branch being a close second.

I will admit that I am pretty good at figuring out where a book is going and how it is going to end, but in Altered I was surprised on more than one occasion by the plot and where it led. And I loved being surprised!

For a debut, this is a fantastic start to great new series that is a fresh new way to look at a plot line that has been done time and time again. I really enjoyed this book and it is a fast and thrilling read! I read it in just one night!

Awesome!

4/5 Stars!

  1. I have to admit I'm super curious about this one and I loved fast paced reads. I wasn't a big fan of the cover based on the ARC but when I saw the finished version I changed my mind

  2. Great review! I love this book too! Depend on the "surprised" type endings I like some of them too. The one in altered really worked. I usually like knowing what will happen in the end so I cheat and read ahead.
